We are excited to bring you this Schizachyrium because it was a total standout in our trials. ![]() For best results, plant 'Twilight Zone' Little Bluestem Grass in full sun in poor to average soils it can tolerate heat and humidity and a wide range of growing conditions, but rich soil or too much fertilization can cause this grass to flop. As a resilient native plant with deep roots, Little Bluestem Grass is well-suited to restoring erosion, is salt tolerant, and can handle or dry, lean conditions. Deer resistant, this is an excellent grass for pollinator, bird, and wildlife habitat. Common Name: Little Bluestem, Ornamental Grass. Plants grow in large, tight clumps and sometimes spread through short rhizomes. The culm (stem) is erect and hairless with many short branches and is often bluish to purple. During the winter months, the entire grass turns a tawny shade of brown, standing proudly where other perennials have gone quietly dormant. The ligule (membrane where the leaf joins the sheath) is white to brownish and up to 2 mm long. As the season deepens, so do the colors – basal foliage lower to the soil line begins to turn mauve and purple, creating strong contrast with the upright blue-green leaves. A small, non-spreading, clump-forming grass with blue-green leaves that turn reddish orange in the fall. The narrow erect clumps may grow to 2 to 4 feet tall with an equal spread. It is native to eastern North America and is found naturally in a wide range of moist to dry habitats. Blue-green foliage emerges in spring and develops a purple cast at the edges for an iridescent mid-summer.
